We have a new vacancy for a graduate student in our lab. Here's the text of the job ad:

The successful candidate will test the behavior of wild type, mutant and transgenic Drosophila fruit flies for defects in olfactory and sucrose preference. The genetic manipulations will mainly concern the signaling pathway of the biogenic amine octopamine. Octopamine-less mutants have been shown to be deficient in various tasks, among them olfactory learning with sucrose as reward. Preliminary data suggest also decrement in sucrose preference. Further tests include walking and flying behavior. The task will be to identify the octopamineric subpopulations responsible for the various defects. This position provides the opportunity to learn basic genetic and behavioral techniques covering a large area of Drosophila neurogenetics.

This project is embedded in the DFG-funded Research UnitBiogenic Amines in Insects”. This entails weekly meetings and seminars, travel funds, placement in the Dahlem Research School, exposure to related research in other model systems and many more advantages over regular PhD positions. This graduate student position offers full German health and social benefits and is not a scholarship. The salary is also more competitive than regular university positions (2/3 compared to the usual 1/2 of a full position).

The successful candidate will have a Master's Degree, Diploma or equivalent degree; ideally, with specializations in Neuroscience and also Genetics.

Experience in Drosophila handling, breeding and behavior is helpful, particularly with regard to olfactory conditioning/testing.

Programming experience is an advantage, as is general computer proficiency.

In order to be considered, applications must include a 500 word description of the applicant's motivation for this particular position and project. The applications including a CV, a letter of reference and the letter of motivation, should be sent, electronically, to:

b.brembs@fu-berlin.de

until October 20, 2010.

For more information about the lab see http://brembs.net

Oh and I almost forgot: it's not necessarily an advantage if you mention that your primary goal in life is a Nobel prize.
