Theis site is sponsored and initiated by the German science ministry (BMBF). It started in 2006 and serves to present German Biotechnology to the general public. The site also hosts several DVD videos about German biotechnology produced by the BMBF. These videos have in part been uploaded to YouTube and have received a few hundred up to a few thousand clicks.
Biotechnology in German forums and blogs in general has received relatively little attention, which is a problem for a site like biotechnologie.de. Moreover, it is a publicly funded site which basically excludes blogs or fourms and almost any sort of interactivity. Therefore, the site is basically limited to serviciing information to users in a one-way information transfer.
