Volker Lange is the first speaker of the day. He is from the WissKomm which produces a weekly science video. Last December he produced a video featuring yours truly grin.png

Volker Lange's talk was mainly about the history and development of WissKomm. He told us that the organization was founded out of considerations in a department of my university, the Freie Universität Berlin. He then showed us one of the weekly science episodes. After the show, he informed us about producing and distributing such a broadcast. Conceptually, they settled on a main topic in the beginning, a news block and then "find of the week" at the end. Very limited funds determined most of the technical solutions. Simple editing and small file size for uploading. Also to save funds, the intro of each episode doesn't contain high-quality commercial photographs, but rather stills from the curent episode. Recording hardware is shared with another recording company in Berlin. They need about 2 days researching the topics every week, a half day for writing the manuscript and about 2-4h for recording the episode. Finally, about 1 day cutting, finishing and uploading.
How to distribute the episodes? They first tried YouTube, but there the annotation capabilities were insufficient. After some searching they settled on blip.tv. This platform provides plenty of annotation capabilities and handles snychronization with iTunes and other subscription services. Soon afterwards, they discovered SciVee and started uploading their videos also to this platform. There, they received about 10fold the number of downloads compared to any other platform such as blip.tv or YouTube. Now their publications attract up to 10,000 downloads for their weekly episodes.
Conclusion: video communication in science requires a perfect targeting of their audience.
