Over the past 14 years, I have had the pleasure of working in team
handball with Kurt Stone. I can say without reservation that Kurt
loves the sport, as evidenced by his ongoing participation as a
player, coach, and director of clubs in California and Atlanta.
My most recent working association with kurt was on the USA Team
Handball staff where he served as Director of Operations, September,
1996 - March, 1998. During his tenure Kurt shared tremendous vision
for the establishment and growth of handball in the U.S. He understood,
however, that if our ultimate goal as the National Governing Body
was to "gain and sustain" international competitive excellence it
was imperative that we establish a solid process by which this could
be accomplished. After taking honest stock of the condition of our
sport in this country, Kurt was instrumental in constructing a development
pipeline, extending from grassroot to elite level participation,
to serve as blueprint for carrying out our mission. Among other
things, this immediately laid the groundwork for our being prepared
to receive a grant for the establishment of the collegiate conference
(SETHC) and a partnership for grassroots development with Americorp.
Kurt Stone has the best interest of team handball at heart and,
as President, will provide the principle centered leadership necessary
to establish team handball as a part of the american sport culture
and eventually our National Teams as viable contenders in the international
arena.
