This afternoon we're (g/f Diana and I) leaving for this year's anniversary installment of the international handball tournament in Itajaí, Brazil. I've participated in this tournament three times so far, with various teams; you can see the pictures in the sports gallery. We'll be arriving tomorrow afternoon and have one full day before the tournament starts off with a big parade through the city. Itajaí is located about one hour by plane south of Sao Paulo on the Atlantic coast (see map). It's a very pretty, small, quiet coastal town. But if you want to go out, just a few miles south is Balneario Camboriu, a tourist resort with plenty of night life going on. Of course, with our schedule of morning practices and evening games, there won't be much time for such indulgement, but we hope to have at least a few opportunities for some leisure time.
This year is a special year. It's the tournament's 10th anniversary and some big teams have announced their participation: Metodista (8-fold and reigning Brazilian champion), a top Argentinian team and the Chilean national team. In addition, the very strong local team will of course also participate. These four excellent teams alone will make it difficult for us this time to get a medal. A feat we accomplished the last three times we participated.
Of course, as always, our coach will be Horia Markel.
