Believe it or not, there currently is no useful online tool to manage journal clubs, at least not to my knowledge. And there must be thousands and thousands of journal clubs around the world. We are currently using the mailing list, calendar and file storage functionalities of Yahoo Groups to manage our journal club. Every member of the JC signs up for their presentation (as is reminded of it!) by the calendar, deposits the PDF of the paper to be discussed in the file storage area (so the other members can get the paper from anywhere) and then informs everyone using the mailinglist.

Recently, we decided to 'upgrade' our JC with a blog. The idea is that every presenter posts a short summary of the work after they prepared their presentation, in order to let people know what's coming and provide a more personal perspective than the abstract of the paper. This blog feature is not offered by Yahoo Groups so instead we use the service provided by a computing facility of our own university, the CeDiS. Today, I received a phone call from the CeDiS asking for a meeting on how they could add the functionality to their service that we currently use at Yahoo Groups. Since the CeDiS blog service is based on WordPress, we may be able to develop a jornal club package that would allow every JC on this planet to use modern technology for the management of their activities.

Who knows, maybe one day all journal clubs will be interconnected and provide post-publication assessment of scientific publications at virtually no cost? But surely I'm getting carried away by my enthusiasm grin.png
