Not that any reasonable person would be surprised, but the latest and greatest study on astrology has found no relationship between birthdate and personality (Spiegel report, Discovery). The researchers studied more than 15,000 people who had been subjected to IQ and personality tests. No correlation of anything whatsoever with birthdate, essentially debunking astrology alltogether. After dowsing and prayer now astrology goes down the drain. Not much superstition left to believe in it seems. Will those results dissuade anybody from believing in such nonsense? Of course not because the mechanisms of superstition are often much stronger than reason. We WANT to believe! This want stems from our drive to control our environment, our fate. This need to control our fate is so strong that we do anything to satisfy it. Superstition and religion are examples of such means. Biologically, one critical mechanism for controlling our environment is operant conditioning (learning about the consequences of our behavior). Operant conditioning permeates our entire existence and if we understand it, we will one day understand the biological basis for religion and superstition.
