I'm writing this post in my role as editor of the innovative group of open access journals, "Frontiers in Neuroscience". I am currently organizing a Special Topic for the journal "Frontiers in Decision Neuroscience", centered around "Decision-making in invertebrates". I have already sent messages to colleagues I thought would be able to provide great contributions, but I probably have forgotten some really important researchers in this field (my apologies!) and I also have received some error messages about incorrect email addresses. Therefore, I'd like to send out an open call for contributions.

A Frontiers Special Topic features the latest advances and challenges in hot research areas and attempts to unify the best researchers. It is a collection of at least ten articles, which may be of different types, including original research, commentary, hypothesis and theory, method, opinion, perspective, and review.

The proposed structure of this Special Topic is provided below and I would be happy to hear your suggestions.

Hosting Journal: Frontiers in Decision Neuroscience

Topic Title: Decision-making in invertebrates

Host Editor(s) : Björn Brembs

Description: Not only since Paul the octopus became famous during the 2010 soccer world cup have scientists realized that decision-making is not a capacity exclusive to the so-called 'higher' animals. Invertebrate animals show an amazing capacity for making decisions even if the external circumstances provide little or no information. This special issue celebrates the diversity of decision-making by showcasing the most well-studied cases in a range of invertebrate species.

Abstract Submission Deadline: Apr 30, 2011

Article Submission Deadline: Dec 31, 2011

Some of the invited contributors include: John Byrne, Bruno van Swinderen, Gonzalo de Polavieja, William Kristan, Bertram Gerber, Nathalie Stroemeyt, Quentin Gaudry, Aike Guo, Edward Kravitz, Romuald Nargeot, Benjamin Hochner, Madeleine Beekman, Magne Friberg, Randolf Menzel, Andra Thiel, Göran Arnqvist, James Marshall, Nigel Franks, Martin Heisenberg

If you work in this field or know of any colleagues with research topics in the field of invertebrate decision-making whom I might have forgotten, please either forward this invitation to them or let me know by sending me an email.

I also think this would be a great opportunity to invite your students as co-authors, not only to provide them with experience in writing reviews, but also to foster a new generation of scientists in this field who will then know each other, at least by name and topic, from a very early stage, due to this special issue.

Like all research published with Frontiers, the articles will be freely available on the Internet and submitted to PubMed Central for archiving. To allow this open-access to articles, the authors pay a publishing fee, which amounts to €900 for regular authors or €720 for Frontiers Associate Editors.

For more information, you may refer to the Frontiers Special Topic page, where you can get further guidance and browse past Special Topics.

It would be great if you were interested in participating! I am looking forward to your reply.
