Most of my colleagues here at our institute work on honeybees. Many of them train bees to extend their proboscis to particular odors and then study the processes which mediate memory formation. This proboscis extension response (PER) conditioning is a really old technique that has been around for decades. It's probably one of the most widespread conditioning techniques of all time. Yet, until now, there hasn't been an authoritative set of instructions on how to effectively condition the bees. Now, finally, Dorothea Eisenhardt from our institute and her colleagues have published a JoVE video detailing the method.

Unfortunately, the embed code I have used previously on JoVE videos doesn't work anymore, so you can't see the video from here. This classic technique now has the set of clear, detailed instructions that it deserves. Everyone is now able to reproduce the simple conditioning experiments. Even high-school students are now able to perform these experiments and investigate honey bee intelligence.

I think this was a big gap in the scientific literature that has just been plugged.
