Blogging on Peer-Reviewed ResearchA Howard Hughes Medical Institute news release presents new genetics research which demonstrates how mobile, retroviral DNA fragments within their host genome have acquired adaptive roles for the host organism. The paper was published in PLoS Genetics and details the evolution of what used to be useless genetic material randomly inserted into a genome by a virus into a functional genetic element which increased the fitness of mammals by tuning the central regulation of energy balance.
Yet one more previously unknown evolutionary mechanism by which necessity turns chance into a powerful motor shaping the history of our planet. One more LEGO piece and how evolution used it to build fitter species. If we continue to discover novel mechanisms at this pace, the creationists will soon run out of major gaps in our knowledge to point out to us. smile.png No, wait, they never cared about evidence, so they'll just keep making bogus or outdated claims, irrespective of science having long invalidated their arguments. grin.png
