My lab:

This is just great. I spent hours dissecting and fixating buccal ganglia from the marine snail Aplysia californica for later imaging analysis and 3D rendering. Did that during my stay at UCSD in June/July. I wanted to create a 3D computer model of all the neurons (nerve cells) in this part of the snail's brain. The idea was to see how constant the morphology of the ganglion is across different animals and maybe to use the model for teaching anatomy to students.
However, in the hurry of leaving for my flight (I was running late of course), I forgot the vial with the 6 ganglia (in 70% ethanol) in the fridge! So I asked the kind folks in the lab to please send me the ganglia via mail. So a few weeks later I get the package and the vial looks like this:

Apparently, someone opened the vial with a razor blade and then let all the ethanol evaporate so that the ganglia all completely dried up and became unusable. What a waste of my time and taxpayers' money! It was sent from a university in the US to a university in Germany. How bad of a bomb could be contained in 10ml of ethanol without any electronics? How difficult is it to just close the thing up again the way it was? Are the people in customs to stupid to open and close screw-caps? Did they have to cut it open? This just pisses me off. Big time.
